1.00Do I select brand of windows and then find an window installer? What is the recommended order for this job?
Q.5 or 6 double pane 30 year old windows are leaking. Should I determine brand and style of windows first and then find a window installer? Or start with window contractor/installer and then ask for help to determine possible window replacement styles etc.
A.Get yourself 3 or 4 estimates from reputable window installers in your area. They will do all the measuring and recommend decent products for you. Make sure that whatever you do install qualifies for the tax incentive/rebate program.
1.00Can you recommend websites (that you have dealt with personally) for oversized window blinds?
Q.And if you had bad experiences with any company, please let me know that too.
Our windows are 68", "off the shelf" blinds come in 63" lengths. Dangit.
A.Not sure what style of window treatments you want, because different styles have different maximumx, but this site sells blinds in custom sizes:
http://www.homedecorators.com/window.php
You should be able to find a 68" in most things, though.
I bought faux wood blinds from them several years ago, and they arrived quickly, look good, were the right size, & I haven't had any problems with them.
1.00I need wooden blinds for a large window. I have regular windows, they're just bigger than the normal window.?
Q.I'm looking for some wooden blinds, doesnt necessarily have to be real wood, to fit my windows which are about 70" x 35". And not very expensive! Any suggestions on where to look? Thanks :)
A.Check a home center such as HD or Lowe's. They have blinds that can be cut to length for you. There are several different styles to choose from. They will come with support clips for the center. Be sure to use them. Hope this helps.
1.00I need ideas for window coverings for a sliding glass door?
Q.I have a sliding glass door about 10' x 6'8". Does anyone have ideas or know of a good website for window coverings?
A.Draperies are the best bet for Sliding doors. There are many different styles to choose from. You can hang them on deco rods or standard drapery hardware. Shades don't work well on something that wide. The only option with shades is to make 2 or 3 shades to cover the one door and then you have gaps. Draperies give your good coverage. go to my website and if you need help let me know. website below
1.00How do I install hurricane shutters on my windows? How do I measure the headers? How many inches do I need?
Q.I am trying to put up aluminun shutters and don't know how far outside the window I have to be. Do I just cover the window? Or do I go a few inches further? Please help me. I have never done this before. How far are the headers supposed to be?
A.Generally the rule is that the tracks should be mounted at least 2 inches above and below the opening to be "up to code". It's a good rule of thumb to go 2 inches past the width on each side too... however this is if you are referring to the aluminum panels that you put up individually into a track and then take down. Other styles are a bit different...
Here are the types of shutters (all aluminum):
Panels (as mentioned above)
Accordions
Colonials
Bahama Style
Rolling shutters
Do you know which kind you are trying to install?
1.00What type of window treatments should i use for our basement appartment windows?
Q.We live in a basement apartment where the windows are at ceiling height, small, and wide. Im having trouble with finding nice window treatments. Im tired of blinds, and ugly curtains. Someone help?
A.Have you considered cellular shades? They're not "industrial" looking like mini-blinds can be, and they'll add some texture and fabric to your windows. They're also great insulators, which you may need if you're living somewhere with cold winters.
Symphony Double Honeycomb cellular shades offer tons of colors to choose from so you can choose a pattern that fits your style. You can find them at http://www.blindcrafter.com/Symphony/symphony.cfm. And if they're not your style, you can do your window treatment research at BlindCrafter.com, too. They have a variety of styles and fabrics to choose from.
I hope that this insight helps.

1.00How do i replace a window on a old door?
Q.I broke a window in my door, and my door is old. Its a door with like a bunch of small windows to make one big one. The window i broke is just a bit smaller then a piece of paper. Please help. (I have heard its hard to replace) Some tips on how to replace it please !
A.Home depot 1st. Windoe glass company 2nd. You will need to rmove the wood that is holding the glass (shards) in place. Hopefully it is one of the tick-tack-toe styles that pop all out as one, otherwise you will need to remove the individual wood for than window pane. If you do that, be prepared to replace that piece of wood too, paint it, and fasten in back into place with finnishing nails (once you're done of course)
Any window company sells panes that small. ust tell them the size of the frame and they can cut the glass to fit.
Go to home depot: get a scraper for windor glazing. Get a small tube or can of window glazing. go home and remove the wood, remove the old glazing. It will be hard and brittle. Get all of it out, otherwise you might just break the new pice later or it won't sit right.
Once the old glazing is out, follow the direction for the new glazing. Som ein the wood frame, set the window, some more glazing on the windor where it meets the frame, and then add the wood that you took out (or the new wood).
Be careful hammerring in the wood back into place as you can split it if the nails are on a know or too close to the ends or side.
It's not hard, just takes patience.
If you broke the window and are trying to get away with not telling them, I recommend telling them and giving them your plan to fix it, your pops can help if he isn't going to pummel you.

Window Styles
A window opens up to whatever you want it to, and so, making a suitable choice is extremely important. Make a choice only after understanding what you expect from your window style, and whether or not that type goes well with the rest of your house. You also need to take the climate into consideration Below are a few types of windows that are available for you to pick from:
A sliding window is not very highly priced, and can be perfect if you are looking at a window that is going to keep in a lot of energy. It is also very convenient to clean these sorts of windows mainly because the sashes can be detached and put back easily. The only drawback with sliding windows is that you can open only a part of it. That is because to open these, you must slide one sash horizontally over the other one.
You can enjoy more than sufficient ventilation in the casement windows type, mainly because these hang on hinges that let you open it wide either on the outside or the inside. The two sides of the window can be easily reached, and that makes the cleaning lot easier. Newer casement windows with pivot mechanisms are also readily available.
The easiest way to differentiate an awning and casement window is by its hinges. Casement windows are hinged to the sides, while the awning is hinged at the top. If you ever saw an awning window that is hinged at the bottom, then you saw what is called a hopper window, which is always placed on low walls. This type of window can offer only little ventilation as it must be tilted to open.
Jalousie windows have to be cranked open as it is merely an assortment of glass slats that tilt open to provide a lot of fresh air. However, security wise it is quite risky to have one of these Jalousie windows.
Fixed pane windows are sealed, and cannot be opened at any time. It is best suited for climatic conditions that are not really favorable, and require the continuous use of a cooler or a heater.
A double hung window simply means two sashes that hang opposite to each other, and only one of the two is in use. That’s because this type of window opens only when one sash is slid on the other, and that is why it gives lesser ventilation. But, you can still get the stale air out by sliding down the top portion of a double hung window, and to get fresh air in, slide up the sash of the window opposite to that. This type of window is quite a regular feature of most American homes.
Single hung windows have one tiny difference with double hung types. The single hung has just one sash that can be opened, whereas the double hung sashes has two windows that can be opened.
Bay windows are a window pattern where there is one window in the centre, and accompanied by two or more other windows on the sides. These types of windows jut out of the wall, and are either double hung or casement type of windows.
A bow window involves more than three segments that extend from the wall to take the shape of a bow like curve.
Apart from being a prime safety option because of its central lock system, the tilt turn window also is safety option that can be used as an emergency exit. The tilt turn window type can be rotated to even a hundred and eighty degrees, and that is why cleaning it is no problem at all.
Egress windows can also serve as emergency exits because of their large size. The best place to have them in is the bedroom.
A storm window is the best protective shield against stormy conditions, and it also protects the house from too much of heat or cold. A simple mechanism that sets this type of window apart from the rest, is the air pocket that exists between itself and the regular window.
